Hawaii Clinical Psychology

About

Picture
Hi,  I am Cynthia JʻAnthony, PhD.
I look forward to meeting you and to working with you!

Background

I have a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa (Iʻve lived in Hawaii since 1990).  My internship and post-doctoral fellowship were both completed at the Salt Lake City VA hospital, which is accredited by the APA. My areas of specialty are trauma related issues, anxiety and integrated behavioral health care. I am also trained and practiced in general psychological therapy.

Here is what my office looks like (where we would work together):

Perspective and Approach

My basic theoretical perspective is based on my understanding that all humans experience pain and suffering. Most people believe, "Happiness is the 'normal' state of being and if I am not happy then something must be wrong with me." Actually, our more 'normal' state of being is to suffer with our pain. Most people want to "feel better" before they start living their lives. This misses the point of  how to live a full and 'better' life. Everyone can learn to live meaningful lives in spite of what our thoughts and feelings say.

In couple's therapy, my perspective is that the 'relationship' is the patient rather than the individuals involved. Developing good communication skills and developing an understanding of how people thrive in relationships (and how you can too) are some of the main aspects of the couple's therapy that I provide.

My approach in treatment is person-centered. Person-centered means that we work together collaboratively to create a treatment plan that works for you. You are the expert on you and I will respect your culture, your insights and perspectives, and your lifestyle and dreams.
This approach also includes respect for and acknowledgement of differences we may have culturally, spiritually, and in other areas that are important lifestyle influences for you (gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, etc,).

When performing psychological assessments and when providing psycho-therapeutic treatment, I use empirically based methods. Much of my treatments, in individual sessions, have focused on the behavioral aspects of a cognitive behavioral therapy perspective. That means that we would focus more on how you experience and respond to situations in your life. Therapies that are more behavioral include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness therapies, relaxation techniques and exposure therapies. Additionally, we could work on both how you think about things (the cognitive part) as well as how you feel about things (your emotions). The treatment plan that we develop for you will depend on your situation, what you feel most comfortable with, and what you find makes most sense to you.
Ethical Guidelines:

On another note, it is important that you are treated ethically. Below is a link to the American Psychological Associationʻs Code of Ethics. This code of ethics will govern my work with you. If you have any concerns about the services I provide, please feel free to discuss it with me.

I look forward to working with you to help you create a more fulfilling life.
